The mechanics of concentration are becoming clearer. OpenAI closed what has been reported as the single largest private venture round in history at $122 billion, pushing its post-money valuation to $852 billion, with Amazon named as exclusive third-party cloud partner as part of a $50 billion commitment. The company has reportedly topped $25 billion in annualised revenue and is preparing for an IPO targeting a near-$1 trillion valuation. Anthropic, meanwhile, continues to attract capital at scale, and the gravitational pull of both firms on LP allocations is measurable: Menlo Ventures raised $3 billion — the largest fund in its 50-year history — largely on the strength of its Anthropic stake. According to industry analysis published this week, later-stage AI application startups are competing for a diminishing share of LP capital against the fundraising pull of the frontier labs themselves.
Below the megaround layer, the deals announced around July 6 and 7 reveal where investors are placing more granular bets. Together AI, a GPU cloud infrastructure provider, closed an $800 million Series C with backing from Aramco Ventures, Vista Equity Partners, General Catalyst, NVIDIA, and others, valuing the company at $8.3 billion — up from $3.3 billion at its Series B. New York-based fintech AI startup Taktile secured $110 million in Series C funding led by Growth Equity at Goldman Sachs Alternatives to expand its agentic decision platform for banks and insurers, automating loan approvals, fraud triage, and claims processing. San Francisco-based Bespoke Labs raised $40 million in Series A funding led by Wing VC to build simulation and evaluation environments for AI agents. The pattern across these deals is consistent: capital is concentrating where AI meets physical-world deployment, regulated workflows, or infrastructure bottlenecks.
The semiconductor layer underpinning all of this activity is itself experiencing a parallel surge. Bank of America now forecasts the global semiconductor market will reach $1.3 trillion in 2026, up from a $1.0 trillion projection made just four months earlier, representing approximately 20 percent annual growth — more than double the pace of the past decade. NVIDIA commands an estimated 70 to 80 percent market share in AI accelerators, with Microsoft, Alphabet, and Meta collectively committing north of $200 billion in capital expenditure in fiscal 2026 alone, the majority directed at AI infrastructure. A class-action lawsuit filed against Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix alleging a conspiracy to fix and inflate memory chip prices by as much as 700 percent adds a potential legal overhang to an otherwise ebullient supply chain.
For the broader startup ecosystem, the picture is more uncomfortable. Nearly 88 percent of AI-related funding in 2026 has gone to US companies, according to Crunchbase reporting, with the second-largest market, China, attracting $16.1 billion in Q1 — a fraction of the American total. Mega-rounds of $100 million or more continue to dominate deal value, and the largest names absorb an outsized share of investor attention, crowding out earlier-stage companies that cannot demonstrate category ownership or fast enterprise revenue. With pressure intensifying on IPO markets to absorb trillion-dollar private valuations — OpenAI, SpaceX, and Anthropic are all expected to eventually seek public listings — the question of whether public investors will validate private market pricing or force a reset may prove to be the defining financial story of the AI era's next phase.
